. right now the storm has started bearing down on canada. it's about 145 miles or so southwest of halifax, snow scotia after brushing parts of massachusetts overnight. the storm disrupted vacations this labor day weekend. its close skirt up the eastern seaboard was less intense than feared. the storm is still kicking up dangerous rip currents. we have nbc's kevin tibbles live in rock port, massachusetts. sunshine in the last hour. looks like sunshine how. you're having a good time it looks like. >> reporter: alex, earl we hardly new you. i don't think we got to meet you at all last night. it rained here a little bit, but nothing like the dire predictions that have been taking place all week with this cat 4 storm showing up here. earl turned out to be a bit of a wimp actually. it's a beautiful day in rock port. all the activities planned for the labor day weekend and were put on hold, everything is being put back on. if folks were headed out here and were a little scared of the weather forecast, my advice to you would be to hop into a car right now because it is a gorgeous day here in rock

toward the coast of nova scotia in canada. kevin tibbles is live in rock port, massachusetts, where last hour we were seeing maybe little rain and wind when i talked to you. what's the scene like now kevin? >> alex, the sun is out here in rock port. it's going to be a lovely day. as a matter of fact, all the activities for labor day that were canceled here have all been put back on because earl really didn't live up to his reputation. not only crossing further out to sea than here in cape ann, but actually not, not dropping as much rain as people expected or at least they had been prepared to expect when this storm went through. so it's going to be a lovely day here. a lot of the boats have been taken out of the harbor. but i'm assuming that they're going to started going back in today because it's supposed to be a lovely day here. the only thing i really have to add to all this, because i don't have a lot to talk about in terms of damage or anything like that, is that yes, you're absolutely right, this storm is heading towards nova scotia. i'm going to be calling my son after this becau

. the fda says canada dry ging gingerale improperly claims to be enhanced with antioxidants. they also say lipton tea falsely links drinking their tea to lower cholesterol. right now, firefighters are scouring boulder, colorado, where eight people are missing. it seemed the eight missing refused evacuation orders. this is very frightening news. what do we know about this search, miguel? >> it certainly is. we do know authorities are doing what they call welfare checks, trying to go door to door to where they believed these people lived. all eight of these people were holdouts. they belief they hammered, that nailed themselves down and said i refuse to evacuate their home. and that they believe they may still actually be holed up on the hill. i asked fire authorities point blank, do you believe there could be some fatalities. they told us sure, it's possible, but they don't believe there is any fatalities. they just believe they're holdouts that refuse to come down from the mountain and they remain unaccounted for. communications up there are still very sticky and iffy. they believe they're

this morning. we're cutting the ribbon on autumn. it's cooled down a lot. dry air all the way from canada is in place this morning. and it's cool. weather watchers reporting in, thanks for checking in, greatly appreciate your faithful report. right now it's in the 50s in most locations in the shenandoah valley, the blue ridge of virginia, and much of western maryland. and far western maryland, the mountains of west virginia, only in the 40s. south and east, weather watchers reporting around the bay right near the waters in the upper 60s, but away from the waters, only near 60 there. and a cool weather pattern will be with us for the next several days as the canadian high pressures has moved in and is in place this morning and will be here into saturday. we'll have highs today reaching the upper 70s to near 80. winds should increase a bit, too, with sunshine. sunny again tomorrow with highs in the southwest and another cool morning, cool again saturday morning, increasing clouds saturday with a high near 80. finally much needed rain on sunday. looks like it will dry out for the n. time for

carolina to new england to canada as a massive storm bears down on the east coast. we'll get the latest from the director of the national hurricane center. he's standing by live. and russia's military is blowing up tanks and missile launchers with a lot of air. we'll show you what's behind this secret inflatable arsenal. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> we begin with the breaking news. an oil and gas production platform caught fire in the gulf of mexico today about 100 miles off the coast of louisiana. mariner energy, the company that owns the platform, says the fire began at one of seven active wells connected to the rig. 13 workers were forced overboard, but the coast guard says no one was hurt. the coast guard reports an oil sheen, although the company says there was no hydrocarbon spill. production from the platform recently averaged about 9 million cubic feet of natural gas and 1,400 barrels of oil each day. let's get some more from cnn's tom forman who is working this story for us. what do we know, tom? >> reporter: hi, wolf, mainly what we don't know at this

to forget our friends up there in canada, they are likely to see a landfalling tropical storm about 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. the bottom line is a glancing blow from a storm that once was a beast and now barely a hurricane. >>> a short time ago, officials lifted the evacuation order for dare county, north carolina, it was enough to cause flooding and power outages to thousands of people. considering that earl was a category 4 storm just yesterday, north carolina's governor says it could have been much worse. 12k >> we dodged a bullet, purely and simply, north carolina has dodged a bullet and we are glad that storm is out of our state. happy labor day weekend, it will be for north carolina. >> ron mott joins us from kill devil hills, ron, how is it looking out there. >> reporter: from a category 4 to a category 1. i can see just to our south here that there are some blue skies headed our way, and by about 3:00 or 4:00 eastern time, we're expected to be mostly sunny with temperatures rising rapidly back into the 90s here, it's going to be a great weather weekend for the labor day holiday.

, the canadian maritimes. fast-moving storm. it will be 1,000 miles into canada by this time tomorrow night. what do we owe for the nice timely shredding of this big storm? >> well, it was a combination of things, brian. first of all, the storm went through a cycle which they do. it was a weakening cycle when it came to cape hatteras and the jet stream you talk about came in and affected it. there's where the hurricane force sustained winds were. only about 60 miles off of cape hatteras last night. these were the hurricane-force gusts. we got the 82, 83-mile-an-hour gusts on the cape. it did what it was supposed to do and we were just lucky. this is going to be one of those "could have beenorse" situations. here we go into mid evening tonight. there you see tropical storm-force winds on cape cod there, the very tip of long island and the hurricane-force winds stay offshore. then late tonight and into early tomorrow, the end of the cape gets clipped and so does nantucket. there's still going to be problems there. even in the metro boston area, they have a flash flood watch for the boston providenc

canada, the great lakes, and new england. it's going to be a big story in the next couple of days. a big change in the weather pattern. the tropical storm in texas, all of the flooding and horrible weather. oklahoma, little rock's getting some heavy rain, northern arkansas, and the ozarks of missouri. that's where the flash flooding will be today. not quite as bad as yesterday. the forecast, gorgeous around chicago. perfect weather out here this morning. it's chilly. this afternoon will warm up nicely. the southern half ofhe country, you're not getting the taste of fall yet. we're not getting a couple of weeks. in the 90s, florida back to texas. as far as we look to the friday forecast, not a lot of changes, quiet weather pattern across the country. finally in dc which saw one of the hottest temperatures ever, temperatures 70s, about 80. that's it. no 90s for once. >> very pleasant. >> good for the teachers and kids back in school too. >> better than the 110 it's been all summer. bill, thanks so much. finally here. you've been waiting since february. the nfl season begins tonight with th

they have hurricane warnings up there. then going to canada and nova scotia and a big change coming into the weekend. looking at today, 82 at 9:00 with the clouds, 88 at noon. sunshine is starting to show up and partly sunny at least at 5:00. 87 we have temperatures this morning which have been mild, upper 70s here. upper 60s in the valley and in fredericksburg, 75. so it is a warm morning and we are looking at the seven day forecast which has some big changes. in fact temperatures today still on the hot side around 90 as we see more sun this afternoon. breezy tomorrow, 79. that will feel great. sunday nighttime lows in the 50s. 85 for labor day and tuesday and wednesday back in the 80s and a chance of a storm late wednesday into thursday. jessica, back to you. >>> of course labor day weekend a big get out of town weekend but maybe affecting normal traffic patterns. >> not directly affecting the metro right now but in terms of people maybe delaying a little bit. >> as far as people heading out toward the beach right now things look wide open, lanes are wide open. if you are going to

of other countries like canada, israel, italy, in allowing citizens who are openly gay or lesbian to serve in their country -- to serve their country and in the military, because after all, it is a matter of fairness. in march, my wife and our two daughters and i were deeply touched when we accompanied my colleague john lewis to georgia and many other congressional colleagues on a trip organized by the faith in politics institute. we went to selma, alabama for a memorial, and we saw firsthand the bridge that was made famous by bloody sunday. we saw with our own eyes the highway where congressman lewis and others, including pioneers like dr. martin luther king himself, marched peacefully into the ports of inequality. my family can only imagine how they suffered as the alabama highway patrolman answered their orderly procession with billy clubs and handcuffs. as a non-american who did not grow up in the jim crow era, there is no way i can ever understand the pain and injustice these champions of justice suffered for a righteous cause, nor can i know exactly the suffering of the service man o
